GLOSSARY

A system where a digital television service is delivered by using Internet Protocol over a network infrastructure. This may include delivery by a broadband connection. IPTV is television content that, instead of being delivered through traditional broadcast and cable formats, is received by the viewer through the technology used for computer networks.

In IPTV networks, it’s a small computer providing two-way communication on an IP network. It decodes the video streaming media which eliminates the need for any coaxial cabling.

A type of network technology for local area networks; coaxial cable carries radio frequency signals between computers at a rate of 10 megabits per second. The most common form of Ethernet cable is the telephone-like RJ-45 cable. Using a “crossover cable,” two machines can be plugged together using their Ethernet ports. The crossover cable is designed for direct connection between two Ethernet devices (PCs, peripherals, etc.) without a hub or switch in between.

The term commonly refers to Internet access via cable and DSL, which is as much as 400 times faster than analog dial-up. The term has always referred to a higher-speed connection but the speed threshold varies with the time of day. Widely employed in companies, the 1.5 Mbps T1 line was often considered the starting point for broadband speeds, in contrast the FCC defines broadband as a minimum upload speed of 200 Kbps.

A modem is a device or program that enables a computer to transmit data over, for example, telephone or cable lines. Computer information is stored digitally, where as information transmitted over telephone lines is transmitted in the form of analog waves. A modem converts information between these two forms of waves.

A device that forwards data packets along networks. A router is connected to at least two networks, commonly two LANs or WANs or a LAN and its ISP’s network. Routers are located at gateways, the places where two or more networks connect.

Also known as a flash drive or key chain drive — is a plug-and-play portable storage device that uses flash memory and is lightweight enough to attach to a key chain. A USB drive can be used in place of a floppy disk, Zip drive disk, or CD. When the user plugs the device into the USB port, the computer’s operating system recognizes the device as a removable drive and assigns it a drive letter.

The amount of data that can be transmitted in a fixed amount of time. For digital devices, the bandwidth is usually expressed in kilobits per second (kbps) or bytes per second. For analog devices, the bandwidth is expressed in cycles per second, or Hertz (Hz).

A technique which allows users to select and watch video content over a network as part of an interactive television system. VOD systems can “stream” content, which allows for viewing in real time. This system can also “download”content. With this approach the program is brought, in its entirety, to a set-top box before viewing starts. The latter is more appropriately termed “store and forward”. The majority of cable and telco based VOD systems use the streaming approach, whereby a user buys or selects a movie or television program and it begins to play on the television set almost instantaneously.

A standard type of cable used to transmit analog audio and composite-video signals between devices such as televisions, satellite or cable receivers, VCRs, game console systems, speakers, and more. Typical RCA cables will have two or three color coded connectors. RCA audio cables have two connectors: red (right stereo) and white or black for left stereo. An additional third connector on an RCA cable will be yellow for composite video.
